The 2nd Culture & Arts Festival of CUHK-Shenzhen — Speed//Time

November 15, 2020 Upcoming

The 2nd Culture & Arts Festival of CUHK-Shenzhen — Speed//Time

2020.11.15-2021.2.26

In 2020, the second Culture & Arts Festival hosted by the University and organized by the University Arts Centre will target at "public art" and will be officially launched on November 15th after one year of preparation!

Our intention is to enable aesthetics to be deeply embedded in every corner of the campus, to extend the artistic vocabulary to a wider space, and to create more connections and dialogues with Shenzhen and urban development.

Why Public Art?

With the rapid development of the society, public art, as a blank in life, has opened up a gap for us to stay for a short period of time to get thoughts and feelings about the surroundings. It is a medium that facilitates our encounter with the world and others. Through unexpected interaction with art, we gain the pleasure and warmth of aesthetics.

Public art on campus will reflect the characteristics of adapting into local conditions. No matter which method or style it presents, it will play a positive role in space, eliminate the inherent boundaries, and shorten the distance between art and us.

Theme

"Time is money. Efficiency is life."

"Acceleration" has always been a fashionable word in the culture of Shenzhen. How is speed defined by time? What is the relationship between speed and time? The curator tried to find a speed of life and  incorporate "time" into the discussion of "speed".

This year, in the Culture & Arts Festival, UAC will invite 8 artists from different fields to create 8 sets of cutting-edge sculptures about "speed//time" for the campus, deconstruct the concept of time and space from unique perspectives, and interpret the sense of familiarity and strangeness in the surroundings. This will touch the heart with ordinary things, and at the same time inject infinite vitality into the continuous interaction.

This new and bold attempt of cooperation will be the first full-scale artistic fusion of the campus and the outside world, and it will also be an avant-garde event which may fully present large-scale sculptures in university. From scale and form to conceptual design, it will be a record-breaking artistic exploration.

"The installation is likely to offer a space where you can connect with time through your body emotions and further observe life. Here, let's return to TIME itself."

Introduction of the work

3.745

Title of the Work: 3.745

Size: 3,400 x 2,400 x 1,700 mm

Year: 2020

Materials: Fiber reinforced plastics, LED lights

Information of the Work:

Time exists in breathing, and speed only lies in comparison. Everyone has his own time, about which everyone has unique and various feelings. Time is private, which could not be shared. Even if in the case that two lovers are kissing with hugging, their feelings towards time differ. Time is as untouchable and boundless as truth is, but its existence could not be denied.

Think about how to concentrate on the matter or the feeling which is just in front of you, and think about how to focus on the step you have moved to, for example, when your toes touch the ground, try to really experience the strength and the organic operation from your own body. Think about how to perceive the elapse of every second now, or how to catch the birth of the next new second. In fact, time is eternal in some perspectives.

This is a lesson that needs lifetime devotion, which is probably an approach to live a life and get close to the truth. The installation is likely to offer a space where you can connect with time through your body emotions and further observe the life.

Here, let's return to TIME itself.

Byoungho Kim (Korea)

"This artwork stems from the reproduction structure of flower. Flowers reproduce in silence, and I think human system is like that too."

Introduction of the artist

Byoungho Kim once studied at the College of Fine Arts, Hong-Ik University, then he got his M.S in Major of Technology Art, Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia & Film, Chung-Ang University. The artist has designed his works as productions of standards, regulations, and systems of social conventions, using blue print instead of freehand sketching and creating a production system with thorough divisions of processing. He inserts electricity into precisely designed and processed metallic works to achieve the "Sculpture of Sound", which is an exploration of new ways of sculpture creation for him.

His works have been exhibited many times in solo and group exhibitions locally and internationally, such as: 2018 <Enchantment> Arario Gallery, Shanghai, China (Solo); 2010 <Invisible Object> SOMA (Seoul Olympic Museum of Art), Seoul, Korea (solo); 2012 <Jing'an International Sculpture Project> Jing'an Sculpture Park, Shanghai, China; 2012 <Korean Eye> Saatchi Gallery, London, UK.

Title of the Work: 31 Silent Propagations

Size: 8,300 x 3,000 x 3,800 mm

Year: 2020

Material: Urethane coating on stainless steel

Information of the Work:

This artwork stems from the reproduction structure of flower. Flowers breeds and proliferates in silence, and I thought human system is like that too. "Silent Propagation" is to reproduce a quiet propagation of human desire. A series of work featured by 26 pieces of tubes visualize the fantasy of human desire that is generated silently, combined together, and propagated.

Through this work, artist tries to show the value of various factors, regardless of their scale or individual significance. This is somewhat similar to how an engineer assembles small parts to make a final product. These parts may seem small in scale, but the system would not be complete without them.

One of the "materials" I like to use is sound. The essence of sound is the vibrations of frequency, and these vibrations are often seen as geometric patterns to the eye. Through the process of changing these geometric patterns, namely modulation, they become sounds for the artworks. A small device is necessary to produce the sounds; computer programming source codes are saved to this device, which operates on direct current (DC)power.

Title of the Work: Earth Thunder

Size: 2,000 x 2,000 x 2,530 mm

Year: 2020

Materials: Stainless steel, LED controller

Information of the Work:

This is a legendary land, a paradise for pioneers, and a wonderland for adventurers. Just like the thunderstorm season in the Pearl River Delta, the game between the rising energy of the Pacific Ocean and the ancient continent, the thunder and lightning on this land near the sea, are metaphors for opening the world, metaphors for a passage into another world that symbolize infinite possibilities. I use a "Shenzhen-style" vision and mood to tell a less "self" landscape.

Title of the Work: Mossketch

Size: Dimension variable

Year: 2020

Materials: Electronic tree, sensor, display

Information of the Work:

Life is good, but data is the truth. Data needs to be interpreted to be understood, or translated to be interpreted. The artwork in and out of the TC101 SPACE is divided into the form that can help people feel the coolness and the heat, the wind and the rain, and even capture the activities of surrounding lives. The concrete world is abstracted by sensors into data, and then re-birth and interpretation hidden in the moss form a new mode of audio and video.

Introduction of the work

gate

Title of the Work: ELONGATED GATE

Size: 5000 x 4000 x 3000 mm

Year: 2020

Materials: LED screen, light

Information of the Work:

Around a large mass of an energy body, there are three virtual crevices with abnormal properties. Anyone who walks past the crevices will be pulled to the core of the energy body by the gravity and disappear; even lights cannot escape from it. In this space, any living creature is swallowed by the energy body while time and space are compressed around it. When the living creature tries to dance, to jump or to observe, or when it eventually overcomes the tug of its gravity and escapes from the crevice, the information stored in the crevice at that time will be infinitely slowed down and reflected.

Introduction of the work

zhuiqi

Title of the Work: The Light of the Sea

Ashore:

Size: 625 x 625 x 3,000mm(including base)

Year: 2020

Materials: Hand-blown glass, mirrored stainless steel, high-definition silver coated glass, LED lights

Water:

Size: 2600mmφ

Year: 2020

Materials: Hand-blown glass, mirrored stainless steel, LED lights

Brick Wall:

Size: Dimension variable

Year: 2020

Material: Hand-blown glass

Information of the Work:

I am quite interested in the physical form, and try to express the "speed of air" from this perspective. To outline the air, I adopt the transparent glass which turns into a tough bubble after being blown to represent the air. I use different locations (mediums) in CUHKSZ campus, including the banks, the water surface, and the brick walls, to represent the speed of air. I choose the three locations in that they are continuous. Air is everywhere. Just like the moon-shaped doorway that creates a frame for the scenary, I frame air. I chase it, depict it, and make it a new scene. This is why I name the work "Tracing Air".

soft

Title of the Work: Flow

Size: 5100 x 5300 x 1300 mm

Year: 2020

Materials: Fiber reinforced plastics, LED light

Information of the Work:

An island floats in soft light that gives a comfortable feeling. The artist tried to use a soft undulating material similar to cloth as carrier and breathing light which is like bubbles. This artwork presents a life that flows like water, creating a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere and adding a touch of relaxation and joy to students' journey after class.

The audience is allowed to walk up on the artwork and it can be used for various purposes: for example, it can serve as a stage in the water for students to perform on after class; beanbags can be placed on it as a platform for chatting, resting and reading.

Introduction of the work

Title of the Work: Distorting

Size: Dimension variable

Year: 2018-2020

Materials: Neon tubes, transformers, electric wires

Information of the Work:

Known as a classic vehicle for advertising and informing, here, conventional white neon tubes were selected and distorted — the very basic way of making neon tube arts— also randomly beveled and bent, to emit similar but differential geometric rays.  White neon symbolizes the fluorescent lamps at workplace while turns and angles represent the twists and turns in reality. Texts, error codes, electrocardiogram and K line chart are epitomized in the pattern while accident, death and life are all tangled and twisted within the strobe. Under the dazzling light, lives are silently languishing and fading. Here in Distorting, in the repetitive pattern and motion, you can see classic production pattern, intense speed of urban development, rapid breathing rate, the manual operation of the workers, and edgy signals all blended in the catchy white light by the artist. This lighthouse is also an attempt to ignite viewers' imagination for future cities.

From all the works, we will see enormous enthusiasm of each artist for the theme "Speed//Time", and they capture the visible or sensible elements from the time and the space they are in and comprehend the subtle dialogue between the real world and them. We will do everything possible to achieve the display on the campus.

The unique sculptural vocabulary constructed through different media allows each piece to stare at the moment and eternity of the present, and contains the endless energy in "Speed//Time".

When you stop in front of a certain piece of work and feel the spatial changes of the campus, every breath confirms a certain pure existence.

Please enjoy them.
