Development of a corpus-based pronunciation and listening training course for Chinese learners of English
Abstract:
This project aims to develop a corpus-based English pronunciation and listening training course for students in- and outside CUHKSZ based on three speech corpora: EdUHK Corpus (previously developed by the principal investigator and co-investigator of the current proposal), The Speech Accent Archive (SAA), and International Dialects of English Archive (IDEA). Ten sets of lesson plans and corpus-based teaching materials will be developed for tertiary-level students to improve their pronunciation and listening skills. The lessons developed in this project can be incorporated into different levels of English training courses offered by the University for both self-guided learning and classroom-based teaching. This course could also be further developed into an elective course for the University. A website will be developed to showcase the lesson plans and teaching materials of the corpus-based pronunciation/listening training course. Both students and teachers at the University are encouraged to use this system during or after class for self-access learning. The course developed through this project will therefore be of great assistance to both students and teachers who are involved in the English learning process.
