CUHK-Shenzhen Chorus 

The Chorus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was formerly the CUHK-Shenzhen Student Chorus (established in October 2014) and the CUHK-Shenzhen Staff Chorus (established in August 2015). In 2019, the two choruses were officially merged into a university-level chorus. Since its establishment, adhering to the concept of innovation and diversification, the Chorus has been successful in performing a wide range of classical and popular songs in Chinese and foreign languages, including The Water Dance of Lluvia, Baba Yetu, Sogno di Volare, Bright Smile and Time to Say Goodbye. It has also performed in grand events, including 2022 “Shared Root, Shared Future” CUHK & CUHKSZ Online Performance Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR, 2022 Pleasure in the Pandemic Joint Performance hosted by CUHK, the Annual Concert of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen from 2015 to 2022 at Poly Theatre and Shenzhen Concert Hall, the 6th National University Student Art Exhibition at Chengdu City Concert Hall, the 2019 Shenzhen Universities' Student Chorus Concert “Ode to the Motherland” at Shenzhen Grand Theatre, the Longgang Water Music Concert from 2018 to 2019 at Shenzhen Universiade Centre, the 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Starry·Sky” Choral Concert, the 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Music in the Cloud” Concert, and the 2017 CUHK-Shenzhen Student Chorus Concert at Longgang Cultural Center. In recent years, the Chorus is keen on A Cappella group-singing performance and adapted several popular songs, including Stars, We Are Young, Weiwei, Manta, Draw, Won't Cry and Kill This Love. The Chorus also selected some excellent A Cappella songs for audio recording and MV production.  During the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, the Chorus produced an original song Heroes in Harm's Way as a salute to the frontline workers. After nearly nine years of development, it has become an influential chorus that masters various music styles.

Conductor: Miette HE

Miette HE graduated from the School of Management and Economics, CUHK-Shenzhen in 2019, and is now working at the University Arts Centre. She has been the Conductor and the Leader of the Chorus since 2015, the Leader of the Orchestra since 2019, and the Leader of the University-troupe Cooperation with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra since 2020. Currently, she is studying under the Artistic Director of Golden Voice Chorus, Mdm. JIANG Nan.

Over the years, she has been organizing and leading the team to attend many grand concerts such as the Annual Concert of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen from 2015 to 2022, the 6th National University Student Art Exhibition, the 2019 Shenzhen Universities' Student Chorus Concert “Ode to the Motherland”, the Longgang Water Music Concert from 2018 to 2019, the 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Starry·Sky” Choral Concert, the 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Music in the Cloud” Concert, and the 2017 CUHK-Shenzhen Student Chorus Concert. In addition to rehearsals and performances, she has been focusing on cultivating the creativity of students and spreading the diversity and appeal of music. In 2019, she started the A Cappella programme, joining in adapting A Cappella works and producing music video, in total of 12 works up to now. Since 2020, she has been leading to build the bridge between the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and the University, establishing the University-troupe Cooperation, and introducing excellent resources of the professional orchestra into the University, which helps the University Orchestra develop better. In 2021, she founded the Chamber Music Group of CUHK-Shenzhen Orchestra, which encouraged students to perform chamber music and take part in many activities in and outside the University. In 2022, she founded the A Cappella Group officially, a new university level art group and led them to participate in a number of performances in and outside of the University, using the art form of A Cappella to convey more power of music.

 

Guest Conductor & Repetiteur & Composer: ZHANG Tianyang

ZHANG Tianyang is a young composer. He graduated from Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Berlin University of the Arts and studied with Professor YE Guohui and Professor Elena Mendoza. He studied with Professor Frederik Schwenk as an exchange student at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and is now a freelance composer in Berlin. He has collaborated many times with domestic and international performers, including conductor Darrell Ang, Halle Symphony Orchestra from Germany, KlangForum Wien, Nordharzer City Theatre Symphony Orchestra from Germany, French Tana String Quartet, Trio Estatico from Paris, Ensemble Alpha from Tokyo, Syntagma Duo from Spain, Orquestra de Valencia from Spain and Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester from Germany. He mainly focuses on the influence of acoustic foreground background on auditory perception and auditory time in music. His compositions include avant-garde music works in various genres, including symphony, chamber music, solo music and vocal music, and have been performed in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Germany, Ukraine, Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Japan, Italy and other places. His recent works include viola trio Ferne Nahe Stuck, string quartet horizontales Indigo, vocal piece Yoseyose, band piece Distanzwirkung, The band will perform at the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Regular Season in October, 2023. He delves into contemporary avant-garde music as well as popular choral music and the creation of musical works in a national style. He is currently the resident composer and repetiteur of Shenzhen Hongling Education Group Golden Voice Chorus, where he adapts and composes choral works for the chorus. He is also the resident score composer for "Landaround".

Piano Accompaniment: WANG Yanan

WANG Yanan is a young pianist. She graduated from the Piano Department of Tianjin Conservatory of Music. She has held solo concerts during her undergraduate years. WANG is currently studying for a master's degree in Germany. She has unique understanding of how to touch the keys of the piano, creating multiple sound layers to shape her style of musical expression. She has been tutored by many piano professors in Germany including Professor Nicolas Hodges from the Stuttgart State Conservatory, Professor Susanne Grutzmann from the Hans Eisler Conservatory of Music in Berlin, and Professor Henri Sigfridsson from the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. She also actively devotes herself in chamber music, repetituer, and new music performance. She has once been praised by the famous baritone Anooshah Golesorkhi.

 

Piano Accompaniment: WU Ailin

WU Ailin is a freshman from Muse College and the School of Humanities and Social Science. She graduated from Harbin No.3 Middle School. She began learning the piano at the age of 4, and was awarded the Associated Board Royal School of Music Certificate in Graded Examination in Music Performance Grade 8 Piano and ABRSM Diploma in Music Performance (ARSM) and both passed with Distinction. She also won the Gold Prize in 2019 UK Royal International Art Competition Piano of High School Group, Heilongjiang competition area. She has performed at the 2022 La La Land Immersive Ball in The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen as a piano accompanist. Currently WU is one of the piano accompanists of CUHK-Shenzhen Chorus.

 

Tenor Solo: ZHANG Zhihao

ZHANG Zhihao is a postgraduate student of the Opera Performance Department in the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He is now studying with Professor Shi Yijie, a famous tenor and academic leader and head of Opera & Voice in the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He graduated from Shandong University of Arts majoring in music education. During the undergraduate study, he won the first prize in the 18th and 19th Shandong Youth Song Competition, and was awarded the postgraduate student exemption qualification by ranking top three in his major. He won the bronze prize in the youth group in the 4th Hong Kong International Music Festival. He once participated in the chorus of Shandong University of Arts, won the first place in Shandong University Students Chorus Festival, and participated in the chorus activity "Yellow River into the Sea" in Shandong Province.

 

Piano Accompaniment of Repetiteur: WANG Lvjie

WANG Lvjie is a postgraduate student in the Piano Department in the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He is now studying with Professor Yuan Fang, a famous pianist and the Associate Dean (Admissions & Administration) in the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He graduated from the Piano Department of Xinghai Conservatory of Music and studied with Professor Huang Tiandong, the president of Guangdong Piano Association. Since junior high school, he has studied in the Piano Department of the Affiliated Middle School of Shenyang Conservatory of Music. He has participated in performances all over the world and has rich performance experience. At the age of 16, he won the first prize of the youth group in the Northeast Division of Shanghai International Youth Piano Competition. He has given many solo concerts and performed in many places around the world. During the undergraduate period, He was selected as the outstanding innovative talent of the Piano Department of Xinghai Conservatory of Music and won the Professional Outstanding Scholarship. In the course of learning the piano, he was successively taught by Professor Wei Danwen, Tan Xiaotang, Kevin Kenner, Jerome Lowenthal, Douglas Humpherys, Pavlina Dokovska, Stefano Fiuzzi, Ju Jin and dozens of other musical masters have directed and been well received.

 

Spoken Parts of Kunqu Opera: YI Yi

YI Yi, whose real name is Zhang Mi, graduated from the Performing Arts Department of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. Yi Yi studied to perform different types of roles: Dao Ma Dan (a female character in Peking Opera who is versed in stage combat), Gui Men Dan (a role in Kunqu Opera which featured unmarried young lady who often stays at home), Tie Dan (the secondary female character in Chinese opera). She used to be a star mentor at CCTV Entertainment Media Co., Ltd.. She is also a member of Shenzhen Dramatist Association, the director of Shenzhen Century Opera Art Research Institute, the head of Shenzhen Baixi Yiyuan Art Troupe, the founder of Yiyuan Xuefu Institution. In 2014, she starred in the small theater dance drama Paradise Interrupted. Since 2017, she has collaborated with over 20 schools in Nanshan, Shenzhen to hold the activity "Opera in Campus" and enabled opera music to be spread in 13 cooperative base schools.

 

Accordion: LI Mengyang

LI Mengyang has been learning accordion since he was six years old. He entered the Accordion Performance Programme of Inner Mongolia University Arts College with the first place in his major. He studied with Professor ZHANG Xinhua, Secretary General of the International Piano Accordion Alliance and a national first-class performer. He has won many awards in international accordion competitions held in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Harbin, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc. Now he is working in the School of Science and Engineering Office, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

 

Xiao: WEI Rong

Wei Rong, associate researcher, National second-level performer, Shenzhen Local Leading Talent, Shenzhen Famous Teacher, Shenzhen Excellent Teacher, Shenzhen Teacher Continuing Education expert, Vice President of Shenzhen Yayunxiao Art Research Institute, high-level talent of Longhua District and academic leader of Longhua District.

Since taking up his teaching career, he has been committed to music education, orchestra construction, school art education characteristic development and education, and its teaching reform research. His students have won the first prize of Guangdong Primary and Secondary School Art Performance, the first prize of Guangdong Guangdong Music Performance and other awards more than 3,000 times. He presided over 17 projects at various levels, including the 13th Five-Year Plan project of Guangdong Province "Research on the Construction of National Instrumental Music Curriculum in Primary and Secondary Schools", and the result topics were displayed synchronously in the second National Music Education Conference in 2019. He published monographs "Hulusi Teaching and Learning", "New Life Curriculum - Music Aesthetics", "Exploration of School-based Curriculum Construction" and "Approach to Chinese Music", and developed 4 municipal continuing education courses. 8 district-level education courses, hosted the Shenzhen good courses "Into the National Music" and "Hulusi Introduction and Appreciation of Famous Songs".

 

Other Instruments Accompaniment: CUHK-Shenzhen Orchestra

The Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was established in 2015, composed of undergraduates who were from different schools and majors, and got together because of their passion for classical music. Starting from 2019, The Orchestra officially became a university-level Orchestra, composing of students, staff and alumni. The Orchestra has been dedicated to the development of classical music on campus, and the promotion of both classical and modern music. It participated in the Annual Concert of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen at Poly Theatre in 2015 and at Shenzhen Concert Hall from 2016 to 2022, the 2017 CUHK-Shenzhen Student Chorus Concert at Long-gang Cultural Center, the 2019 Longgang Water Music Concert at Shenzhen Univer Centre, the 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Starry·Sky” Choral Concert, the 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Music in the Cloud” Concert, and giving performances independently or collaborating with The Chorus to perform excellent music pieces such as Peer Gynt, Pirates of the Caribbean, Castle in the Sky, L'Arlesienne, The Complete Harry Potter, Let it Go and Show Yourself. In November 2020, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra launched the University-troupe Cooperation project, which includes the cooperation in courses and performances. In July 2021, the Orchestra was invited to participate in the filming of the promo of Readers II by China Media Group at Pingshan Theatre. As a university-level art group, The Orchestra is planning to perform more classical pieces.

 

Host: LI Haoke

LI Haoke is a Year-3 undergraduate from School of Humanities and Social Science of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Harmonia College, majoring in Applied Psychology. Since joining the Chorus of the university, he has participated in many performances inside and outside the university. He once served as the Tenor part leader of the Chorus and now is the head. He has also hosted many large-scale events on campus.
