Time: 16:15-17:30
Venue: W201, Administration Building
Language: Chinese
Abstract:
The race to conquer the quantum domain, such as quantum computing and communication, is among the most fiercely competitive in today's world of technology. As China moves into a real "no man's land" of quantum and other hi-tech, the United States has imposed many obstacles on our development, such as technology blockades, equipment embargoes and personnel travel restrictions. In this presentation, the speaker will provide a comprehensive analysis of the current situation and challenges in the development of science and technology at home and abroad, especially in the quantum field, elaborate on China's research base and advantages in this domain, and make some policy recommendations.
About the Speaker:
Professor Yu Dapeng received his Ph.D. degree from Laboratoire de Physique des Solides, Université de Paris-Sud, France in 1993 and has been an Associate Professor and Professor at the School of Physics, Peking University since 1995. He was elected as a member (Academician) of the Division of Technological Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015. In 2016, he joined the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) as a Chair Professor and there he set up the Shenzhen Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering. He is the Chairman of Shenzhen Electronics Society and the Director of the Quantum Information Branch of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, among others.
Prof Yu is one of the world pioneers in developing methods to synthesize from the bottom, and to characterize 1-dimensional semiconductor nanowires and 2-D Dirac Quantum Materials, and made important contributions to the investigations of low-dimensional quantum materials. In the past decade or so, his research has focused on the precise quantum control on the photoelectricity, heat and magnetism of single semiconductor quantum wires and monolithic quantum structures. He has obtained a series of important research results that have laid a solid foundation for in-depth quantum control and quantum computing.
After joining SUSTech, he has dedicated himself to building a quantum research platform, the later Shenzhen Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering. The Institute has laid out research in the direction of future information materials and devices, quantum simulation and quantum computing, quantum precision measurement and quantum engineering applications, becoming an important part of China's strategic force in quantum science and technology. Professor Yu was awarded the title of Shenzhen High-level Professional Talent in 2016, named a leader of the innovation and entrepreneurship by the Pearl River Recruitment Program of Talents of Guangdong Province in 2017, and won the "Shenzhen Industrial Development and Innovation Talent Award" for three consecutive years in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
