Inauguration Ceremony Held for CUHK-Shenzhen School of Music
The CUHK-Shenzhen School of Music, also known as Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (provisional) was inaugurated in the morning of August 3, 2021 marking a new chapter for the music development of the highest standard in Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area.

The School of Music is one of the "Ten Cultural Facilities for the New Era" envisioned by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, as well as part of the city’s major cultural project for its 14th Five-Year Plan. Entrusted by the Party Committee and Municipal Government of Shenzhen, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen undertook the project at the end of 2018 as a new school within the University. The enrollment of its first-cohort students concluded with a total of eight students who will start their first teaching term in this September.
Drawing on the advanced educational concepts of top-ranking institutions at home and abroad, the School aims at cultivating outstanding music talents in both academic and performing studies. It is structured to cover undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programmes of international music education, thus producing talented performing artists and musical masterpieces with Chinese values and spirit that can reach out to the world and also enriching local lives.


This emerging School has achieved excellent results in its first-year enrollment, ranking among the top universities in Guangdong Province for the music-category undergraduate enrollment. Among them, its admitted vocal students ranked first in the country in terms of overall performance scores.


According to Professor Xiaogang Ye, Dean of the School of Music, the School will offer advanced music workshops taught by world-class masters to produce outstanding students with a global perspective for Shenzhen and China. The first year's “Master” faculties include artists from the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Zurich Opera, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (USA), Teatro Massimo Bellini (Italy), UMKC Conservatory (USA), Royal Northern College of Music (UK), Central Conservatory of Music, Harbin Conservatory of Music, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.

The inauguration ceremony of the CUHK-Shenzhen School of Music was accompanied by a faculty appointment ceremony. The founding members as announced by Prof. Xiaogang Ye include: Professor Wing Wah Chan, Vice-President of the CUHK-Shenzhen School of Music and a renowned composer from Hong Kong, China; Ms. Weiling Xu, violinist and music educator; Ms. Liping Zhang, famous soprano, head of the Opera Department of the Central Conservatory of Music and member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; Mr. Yijie Shi, renowned tenor and professor at the China Conservatory of Music, the Hunan Normal University, and the Toho Gakuen School of Music, Japan; Ms. Huiling Zhu, famous mezzo-soprano residing in Europe; Mr. Wei Lu, violinist and Concertmaster of Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin; Mr. Yang Shen, famous bass-baritone; and Ms. Fang Yuan, renowned pianist and leading figure of piano music education.
The teaching team is determined to bring about the highest level of teaching to the students.
