Book Launch and Sharing Session for President Yangsheng Xu's latest book, "Lake at Dusk"

April 24, 2024 University News

The World Book Day came around at the early summer. Amidst the season to celebrate reading, a book launch and sharing session was organized at the Library of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen on the evening of April 22, presenting President Yangsheng Xu's latest work.

Six years following the debut of "The Ferryman," President Yangsheng Xu introduced his latest work, a collection of 35 essays titled "Lake at Dusk," in March. In these essays, he reflects on his work experiences, and life journey in simple yet deep writing. Readers can explore various aspects of life, the complexity of humanity and gain philosophical insights from his work.

Mr, Hu Hongxia, a writer and media professional, presided over the event. Hu led discussions with Xu and the audience on themes like education, life, science, art, and more.

President Xu and Mr. Hu had a lively discussion, focusing on the book's educational themes and recommended readings for young people. Their dialogues extended beyond the book’s content into broader discussions encompassing life's profound journey. Talking about the initial motivation behind writing these essays, President Xu said, “I considered writing these articles as a fundamental part of university education. Education, at its essence, involves the transmission of one soul to another, much like the wind swaying trees."

Xu advocated for finding strength through reading and urged people to draw on the wisdom found in books to confront life challenges. He encouraged students to seek tranquility in a world often fraught with impetuosity and to be a kind and tolerant person in a world often marked by narrow viewpoints. He pointed out that reading not only enables people to learn from others but also gain emotional enrichment and nurture lifelong philosophies. Reading should serve as a beacon of light during one’s darkest moments, echoing the sentiments expressed in the two calligraphic pieces by Xu hanging in the University library. The first reads, “In this late night, as long as there is even one person reading, humanity still has hope.” The second reads, “Even in the darkest times, there is always a guiding light here for you.”

During the interactive session, students sought advice from President Xu on selecting  books and establishing reliable sources of guidance. The president shared insights gleaned from his personal experience, suggesting that a mature and self-assured person should read widely and trust their instincts in choosing meaningful books.

As the event drew to a close, President Xu autographed copies of his book and took pictures with the attendees.

For an hour, the audience were immersed in President Xu's reading world, gaining a glimpse into the scholar's profound concerns. The event, though brief, inspired attendees by the power of reading and shape a brighter future filled with knowledge and wisdom.
