“Take the advantage, make still further progress,” Prof. C. F. Lee, renowned scholar from University of Hong Kong, encourages students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, in giving a lecture of “the Silk Road on Land and Sea– Historic Evolution and Future Prospects” at the 5th Chinese Cultural Colloquium. “In light of the concerted effort to rejuvenate and modernize the Silk Road, a good understanding of the evolution of the Silk Road would aid in the proper planning of its future.”

In his lecture, in tracing back the historical development of the Silk Road on both land and sea, Prof. Lee introduces the great impacts that the two roads had on trade routes between Asia and Europe in ancient times. Through graphic and written materials from archaeological discoveries, Prof. Lee illustrates how long-distance trade played a major role in the cultural, religious, and artistic exchanges that took place between the major centers of civilization in Europe and Asia during antiquity.

At the end of his lecture, Prof. Lee displays an old maritime map of China, pointing out the historical ports of Guangzhou and Tuen Mun and showing how they played important roles in China’s maritime trade. In his closing remark, Prof. Lee wishes the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, “seize the opportunity, ride on the east wind of development and make still further progress of the University.”
