Speaker Profile: Professor Tze-wan Kwan, Dr. Phil. (Bochum, Germany), Professor & former Chairman, Philosophy Department, CUHK; Founding Director, Research Centre for Humanities Computing; Founding Director, Archive for Phenomenology & Contemporary Philosophy. He has been a visiting scholar to the University of Hawaii, Duquesne University, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the University of Zurich, Switzerland, Cambridge University, United Kingdom, and Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.

Professor Kwan’s primary research realm is German philosophy. In addition, his research interest also covers such cross disciplinary subjects as linguistics, language education, language policy, cognitive science, brain science, and humanities computing. He has published more than 100 papers in English, German and Chinese, and compiled and translated On Kant and Hegel by Richard Kroner and Cassirer and his Late Work Zur Logik der Kulturwissenschaften in addition to such great works as From a Philosophical Point of View and Articulation-cum-Silence: In Search of a Philosophy of Orientation. Over the past eight years, he has been a leader in developing a project of Multi-function Chinese Character Database: With Archaic Script Forms, Etymologies, English-Chinese Lookup, & Word-formations Phonologically Disambiguated According to the Cantonese Dialect.

Abstract：The foundation of this new Chinese Character database intends to explore basic meanings of Chinese Character by utilizing archaic Chinese scripts in relation to available documents and other pertinent data. Combined with computer technology, the database serves a meaningful reference to Chinese Character education.
