Speaker: Prof. UCHIDA Keiichi

MC: Dr. HE Nan

Abstract:

A significant wave of cultural interaction between East and West, known as the "Eastward Spread of Western Learning," began in the late 16th century. This era introduced numerous innovations to China, encompassing modern science and facets of modern civilization. Cultural Interaction Studies, an emerging academic discipline previously termed "Cultural Exchange Studies," offers a framework for understanding these exchanges. The discipline is characterized by its interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, trans-regional, and multi-directional approach, often employing a periphery-to-center perspective. This lecture will first delineate the scope and content of Cultural Interaction Studies. Subsequently, it will examine the methodological strengths of the periphery-to-center approach, with a particular focus on its application in Western sinological research. Furthermore, by examining various aspects of language contact research, such as the nature of translation and the case of "Pidgin English" as a prime example of language contact, the lecture will highlight the diverse potential of "Cultural Interaction Studies".
