The event included the signing of four cooperation agreements and the launch of four projects between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Joining the ceremony were Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Wang Weizhong, Deputy Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial CPC Committee and Secretary of the Shenzhen Municipal CPC Committee; John Lee Ka-chiu, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; and Qin Weizhong, Deputy Secretary of the Shenzhen Municipal CPC Committee and Mayor of Shenzhen.

Shenzhen-Hong Kong Synergy is a distinctive attribute of MED, CUHK-Shenzhen, as the first multi-partnership medical school in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In this context, the medical school will continue to explore its international mode of operation, the construction of new medical disciplines for the future and the localization of the medical-teaching-research/industry-academic-research system. The goal is to build an international medical school facing the future, with three functional pillars: training of high-end medical personnel, advanced medical services and innovative medical research.

During the Inauguration Ceremony 2021 of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Lam lauded, "The establishment of the medical school is not only an important milestone of CUHK-Shenzhen, but also a response to the country's overall deployment of the Greater Bay Area. This is of iconic significance in advancing the healthcare industry in the Greater Bay Area, further intensifying the new mode of cooperation between Hong Kong and Shenzhen in the medical and education sectors, and upgrading the professional services.”

At present, Shenzhen is undertaking the historical missions of spearheading the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) as well as developing into a Pilot Demonstration Area of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics (PDA). Against this backdrop of growing opportunities, the establishment of the School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals is expected to deepen the cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and to facilitate the development of an internationalized medical talent training system. The school will also build platforms for medical research, research transformation and international medical cooperation, thereby bringing the advanced experience of Hong Kong-style medical education and medical services to the Mainland.

In the future, the School of Medicine will accelerate the building of a cluster of medical disciplines with Greater Bay Area advantages. It will continue to explore an integrated medical service system that combines medical-industrial, medical-scientific and medical-economic aspects, so as to upgrade the cooperation between Hong Kong and Shenzhen in medical education and healthcare services.

On the other hand, the Medical of School will further enhance its core competencies by continuously exploring new systems and mechanisms for co-operative education and health care operations between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, as well as practising new concepts and models of medical education and hospital management. Ultimately, it will evolve into a high-level medical center serving people's healthcare demands across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
