After rounds of rigorous selection, Mr. Songhao Li of SME (Junior student) and Ms. Yuyang He of SSE (Junior student) were successfully admitted to the Visiting Student Program (VSP) offered by the University of Oxford for 2018/2019 Academic Year. Both students arrived at UK early this month to kick off the one-year study abroad program.

The Visiting Student Program (VSP) is organized and administered by Oxford Prospects and Global Development Centre (OPGDC) under the Regent’s Park College, University of Oxford.

Every year, the program is open to eight to ten Oxford’s Chinese partner universities, and admits no more than 15 students nation-wide. The program is famous for its extremely high admission standard. An applicant needs to meet the following requirements in order to be considered as a potential candidate:

-  A GPA of 3.7/4.0;

-  IELTS overall score of 7.0 (with at least 7.0 in each), or TOEFL overall score of 110, with component scores of at least: Listening 22, Reading 24, Speaking 25, and Writing 24;

-  Able to provide other related documents to establish academic standing.

Admitted students enjoy access to all academic and social facilities at Oxford, such as a wide range of university facilities, including the Bodleian Library, faculty (subject) libraries, the Oxford University Computing Services, and the great wealth of lectures. They will be on courses taken by full-time undergraduate students and study alongside them in tutorials and lectures.

Since all courses taught at CUHK-Shenzhen are in English, Oxford agrees to waive the above language requirement for our students.

A one-year selection process was undertaken among Oxford’s institutional partners in China. Only 12 students were eventually admitted strictly adhering to the admission standard. Aside from the two students from CUHK-Shenzhen, the rest of the 10 students come from 8 other top universities in China, including Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Tongji University, etc. This is the first batch of CUHK-Shenzhen students participating in the selection and admitted to the program.

The program has recently opened its new round of admission for 2019/2020 Academic Year. It offers suitably qualified students the opportunity to study as Registered Visiting Students and as members of one of the seven partner colleges: Regent’s Park, Mansfield, Pembroke, Worcester, Blackfriar’s, St. Anne’s, St. Peter’s.

In the afternoon of Tuesday, October 30, 2018, Dr. Jason Lu, Liaison Officer of OPGDC, will visit CUHK-Shenzhen and host an information session to introduce the Visiting Student Program to our students. Over 90 students have already registered for this event.

“My first impression upon arrival at Oxford is that it is a city with beautiful historical buildings and streets! I would like to explore my possibilities at Oxford, both in Economics learning and making lots of friends. The academic experience here is quite unexpected. Here at Oxford, an academic year is divided into three trimesters. Same as a regular Oxford undergraduate student, I can choose 2 courses for each trimester among all courses offered across the university. The study load is especially heavy if one chooses 3rd year courses (the undergraduate program at Oxford is for 3 years). I need to write one essay every week upon finishing loads of reading assignments. The quality of these essays determines my academic performance. Besides studying, it will also be fascinating to join extracurricular activities, including the football club!“
